About Betty

Personal and Family History

Betty SouthardI was born and raised in Portland, Oregon in committed and active Christian family. I met my late-husband Fred at Portland Youth for Christ where we were both active throughout our high school and college years. We had been married 55 years at his passing in 2012. We raised three daughters, Tara, Susan and Kristi, who also married Christians and made us the proud grandparents of seven precious grandchildren ranging in age from 21-32. Six of the seven grandchildren are now married and our oldest granddaughter has given me three wonderful great grandchildren, and I’m waiting for more!

Educational and Employment Background

My schooling was completed in Oregon and I enrolled at George Fox University. However, I quit school and went to work at Pacific Bell Telephone to put my husband through University. When our children arrived I quit work to become a full-time wife and mother. As a eager learner I took advantage of all opportunities to attend lectures, seminars, training courses, Bible study classes and retreats continuing to grow intellectually and spiritually. In later years I enrolled in many courses, finally receiving a Masters Degree in Theology from Fuller Seminary in 1985.

We were transferred from Portland, Oregon to Tempe, Arizona in 1967. We became very active in a new church that was established there that year, and grew to become one of the first “seeker-sensitive” churches in the nation. I taught both college and adult Sunday School, Women’s Bible studies, and received mentoring and training from the excellent pastoral staff at Grace Community Church.

In 1978 my husband was asked to join Dr. Robert Schuller’s ministry as CEO to help guide it through the transition time of building the Crystal Cathedral. The family moved to Southern California in 1979 and I became actively involved in the women’s ministry department of the Crystal Cathedral. I have taught the women’s Bible Study for over 20 years, as well as serving on the board of the International Women’s Conference, and planning and emceeing the program annually.

At this time I also enrolled in Fuller Seminary, furthering my training in theology. I also attended the Christian Leaders Authors Speakers Seminars (CLASS) regular and advanced classes, and eventually joined their staff, traveling with Florence and Marita Littauer around the nation training men and women to become Christian leaders, writers and speakers. I continue to do so at this time.

In 1988 I became the Minister of Caring for the Hour of Power Ministry. In that capacity I personally answered letters received by the Hour of Power, which required special counseling or theological help. I have been an inspirational speaker and Bible teacher for over 35 years. I have also served as adjunct professor of writing for the Biola Organizational Leadership Development (BOLD) program at Biola University.

I have served on the boards of Royal Family Kids Camps, a ministry to children through the social services departments around the nation, and Christian Women’s International Network, with whom I have traveled to Eastern Europe, Germany, Zaire, Malaysia, and Korea doing ministry.

I currently serve on the Board of Soul Shepherding, a ministry to Pastors, their wives and families, and other Christian Leaders, founded by Dr’s. Bill and Kristi Gaultiere www.soulshepherding.org and www.christiansoulcare.com.

I have completed 4 years of training in the art of Spiritual Direction and offer that service to believers interested in furthering their Spiritual Growth.

Previously I was involved with www.CLASSeminars.org, teaching others how to become the very best Bible Teachers, Inspirational Speakers and writers. I was also a member of their board.

I am involved in ministry and regularly worshipping at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach, CA.

Thomas Nelson released my first book, The Grandmother Book, published in 1993. In 1999, Bethany House, publishers, released my second book, Come As You Are, How Your Personality Shapes Your Relationship with God. My third book, The Mentor Quest, Practical Ways to Find the Guidance You Need, was released in March 2002.

Hobbies

I enjoy sewing, decorating and playing with my grandchildren. I love to travel….anywhere, anytime. I also love to read and to encourage and mentor others who are eager to learn.

My greatest delight in life consists of making a difference in the lives of others by sharing the lessons I have learned, guided by the presence of the Holy Spirit, throughout life. I do this by regularly teaching Bible studies, speaking at seminars, retreats, luncheons, banquets, Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) groups and any other venue that allows me to share.
